A Fresh Take on a Byron Bay Icon

Nestled in the heart of Byron Bay, Combi has long been a haven for smoothie lovers and brunch-goers, its vibrant dishes as visually stunning as they are delicious. After years of success, new owners Christel and Ryan felt it was time for a refresh—one that honoured Combi’s legacy while bringing new energy to the beloved space.

They turned to Rachael Peachey of Studio Peachey, who has a long-standing love affair with Tiles of Ezra, drawn to the brand’s rich variety of colours and textures.

“I keep coming back because their range offers something different every time,” she shares. And the experience? Always seamless. “Chantel and the team make the process so easy—they’re just as excited about the design as I am!”

The Counter Transformation

A key feature of the refresh? Tiles of Ezra. Their soft pink and nude mini brick encaustic tiles—laid in an oblong checkerboard pattern—elevated the counter face with depth and personality. The playful arrangement of colours and shapes added a unique texture, making the counter a standout focal point within the cafe. The subtle contrast between the soft pink and nude tones created an inviting warmth that perfectly complemented Combi’s beachy, relaxed vibe. The counter is not just a functional element; it’s an art piece that captures the essence of the refreshed design.

The Bench Seat Connection

The same pink hue was thoughtfully carried through to 100x100 square tiles adorning the built-in bench seat. This design choice created a seamless yet dynamic connection between different areas of the cafe without feeling overly coordinated. The larger tiles provided a bold, clean look that contrasted beautifully with the intricate mini bricks of the counter. The bench seating area, wrapped in this vibrant pink, invites guests to linger, blending comfort with an eye-catching aesthetic that maintains the continuity of the overall design.
